Sting is in a hot tail at historic Wigan
Sponsored by Steve Hindle (Marriott Worsley Park GC)
The sun shone again for the latest MDGA Winter Series competition at the historic Arley Hall, the home of Wigan Golf Club.
A tricky and scenic course was backed by the excellent support and service in their historic clubhouse and players were able to enjoy refreshments on the lawn overlooking the moat, the home to rare black swans.
It was also the course where Alliance President Ian Brooks (Bolton Old Links) had started his golf as a young boy when it was a 9-hole course and he could sneak on and play some of the holes for free.
The day was dominated by the last group out with professional OoM leader Josh Crumplin (Disley) again showing his love of the sun posting a massive 45 points to top the individual pro section ahead of Phil Archer (Poulton Park) 41 and Craig Corrigan and Dave Green (Dukinfield) 40.
Josh and his partner Chris Jackson (Tytherington) romped home in the Pro Am section with 49, from Andy and Tony Palmer (Chorley) 44 and MDGA Captain Grant Hamerton (Pike Fold) and Gareth Mawdsley (Stand), Dave (Boy) Green and Nigel Mather (Ashton-on-Mersey), Phil Archer and Mark Pasquill (Leigh), Craig Corrigan and Phil Cooney (Houghwood) and Martyn Hamer and Mark Perrin (Davyhulme Park), all 43.
Prestbury’s hot young brothers Tom and Elliott Kirton were last out with Josh and Chris and they profited from their learning experience by posting 46 points to top the Am Am section ahead of Flixton’s Phil Dearden and Carl Tetlow 43 and Craig Gilligan (High Legh Park) and Kris Partington (Alder Root) 42.
Josh Crumplin completed his hat-trick by winning the Nearest the pin prize and Graham Moore (Chorley) was again top of the Best Dressed section.
Ian Brooks thanked all at Wigan for putting on a great show and reviving his golfing memories from the 1950’s.
