Sting in the tail for the President’s Trophy.
WESTHOUGHTON Golf Club provided a great stage for the final competition of the busy Alliance Winter season presenting a pristine and challenging course with fabulous greens enjoyed by all of the players.
Alliance President Ian Brooks (Bolton Old Links) and the ever-busy Jim Cunliffe ensured that the day went as smoothly as usual with all the players and guests well and truly fed and watered by the excellent Westhoughton staff.
It was a singles medal with plenty of prizes and trophies being competed for and Alliance legend Craig Corrigan set the pace for the President’s Trophy with a neat score of 71, matched later by Steve Ingham (Blackley).
But as always in golf there can be a sting in the tail and it was provided by Disley assistant professional Ian Ridgway playing in the final group.
Ian went clickety click to be the deserving winner of the coveted President’s Trophy.
The top amateur prize went to Danny Beeley (Ellesmere) with a nett 70 leaving him two clear of Stamford duo Dave Quinn and Andy Hannay with Dave winning the cpo for the runners-up spot.
The trophies for the seniors saw Stamford again on top with Martin Dwyer having the best gross of 80 and Dave Quinn the best nett.
John Egan (Haigh Hall) completed the winners’ list with the nearest the pin prize.
Alliance Captain Chris Lee (Mellor and Townscliffe) completed a memorable and usually sunny winter season as he enjoyed played with Westhoughton Captain John Price and club legend Gordon Howarth, the President of the Bolton and District Society of Golf Clubs.
The Alliance officers were given deserving thanks by all of the players on the day for their skilled and fantastic work during a very busy season in often difficult circumstances.
The plans for the new season beginning in September are well under way and will be sent out in due course to over 110 golf clubs in the Alliance.
During the summer months the Alliance’ s unique Inter Club team competitions will be enjoyed by hundreds of players representing their clubs aiming to reach the finals in September.
