President's Day at Hart Common GC on Wednesday 1st May 2024

Sponsored by Peter Roberts, Hart Common GC

After many weeks of frustrating cancellations due to poor weather and golf courses across the region suffering very limited play the MDGA managed to conclude its season with President’s Day at Hart Common GC.

It was by far the worst-ever season for the MDGA over the winter months and they were delighted that Hart Common GC stepped in to stage President’s Day- the last event of the winter season after Styal GC had to step down due to course condition.

Hart Common provided an excellent and challenging 18 holes and great clubhouse service and a very friendly welcome by staff and members.

The final competition of the season was for the historic President’s Trophy and for most of the day Chorley pro Andy Palmer led with 38 points.
But as always there was a sting in the tail as Alliance regular Phil Kelly took the lead with a great haul of 43 and went on to be presented with the trophy by Alliance President Ian Brooks.
Last Out Scott Jackson (Disley) edged Andy into third place as he posted 39.

It was close in the Amateur section with Alan Calvert (Ashton-on-Mersey) winning a cpo on 34 from Steve Heywood (Manchester), two more than Joe Ridley (Saddleworth) and Phil Cooney (Dean Wood).

The Nearest the Pin prize was won by Paul Thornley (Flixton).

The Order of Merit prizes, over a much diluted season, were dominated by Davenport GC.
Jamie Howarth retained the pro’s OoM with 351 from Scott Howarth 229 and Ian Ridgway (Disley) 204.

The Amateur OoM was also won by Davenport as Paul Robinson, who was runner-up in the previous two seasons, won with a total of 244 putting him clear of Ross Birch (Stockport) and Anthony Herbert, both 187.

Alliance officials are now working hard on preparing a terrific programme for their Centenary Year which begins in August.
